Celebrating Independence Day in St. Lucia
Come celebrate St. Lucia’s Independence Day while you stay in the Caribbean. Join in on the events, wear the island’s national colors, and celebrate the day St. Lucia gained its complete independence.
The history of Independence Day
February 22 marks the historic day St. Lucia achieved its entire independence from the United Kingdom in 1979. Originally inhabited by the Arawaks around 200 – 400 AD and later by the Caribs around 800 AD, the Europeans began to settle around the 1660s. With a history of colonization by the French and British since the 17th century, the island commemorates this significant day through community events and a vibrant display of its national colors.
National Colors Day (the Eve of Independence Day)
If you’re staying in St. Lucia the day before Independence Day (the 21st), you may notice colorful displays of blue, gold, black, and white throughout the island. National Colors Day (which is the day before Independence Day) is a time to wear the island’s flag colors with pride. For travelers visiting St. Lucia during this time, it’s a great way to participate in the celebrations and culture in an easy, respectful way. Just remember to pack clothing in any of the four colors in advance!
