Sulphur Springs Revamp
You can expect one of St Lucia’s most popular attractions not to be as crowded very soon because the island’s world-famous Sulphur Springs Park is receiving a revamp.
In an effort to enhance the services on offer at the sulphur pools, The Soufriere Regional Development Foundation (SRDF) is undertaking the construction of three additional pools, a deck, additional storage and changing rooms.
According to the organization’s acting chief executive officer, Lester Cazaubon: “There has been an increase in demand for pools for a relatively long time. To this end, the organization wants to ensure that we meet these demands by increasing our ability to serve our patrons and to enhance the experience at the park.”
He noted that the additional pools will reduce the amount of congestion on very busy days and offer visitors uncompromised service.
The Sulphur Springs is one of the hottest and most active geothermal area in the Lesser Antilles. The park is approximately 45 hectares and features the Caribbean’s only drive-in volcano.
A walk through the crater takes you past pools and hot springs bubbling and belching with sulphur-laden steam. Just outside the springs, you can bathe in the warm sulphuric pools, reputed for its soothing effects.
Carib folklore denotes that the springs are a place where one’s soul meets death—yet, the Sulphur Springs actually act as a safety valve, constantly releasing subterranean pressure and stabilizing the area.
The Soufriere Foundation is a not for profit organization that undertakes social, economic, cultural and other sustainable developments in the Soufriere region. The organization, which was established in 1993, generates revenues from the Sulphur Springs Park, Gros Piton Nature Trail, Comfort Center, Soufriere jetties and 88.5 Soufriere FM.
