October is Creole Heritage Month in St. Lucia
Experience St. Lucia in full color during Creole Heritage Month this October! Since 1981, St. Lucians have been celebrating the cultural, ethnic, and artistic heritage of our island each fall. If you’re planning a trip to St. Lucia, this is the perfect chance to learn about our island and its people through musical and theatrical performances, food festivals, and lots of colorful street parties!
Get your appetites ready for World Food Day on Sunday, October 13th. There will be lots of events happening around the island, so keep your eyes peeled for announcements. Be sure to try some Langouste (a delicious local spiny lobster), Bouyon (a thick red bean stew with meat and vegetables), float bakes (fried dough, not too sweet), and other amazing Creole delicacies. With all the fresh seafood, fruit, and other amazing provisions available naturally on the island, you’ll never have to go far to find fresh, flavourful food.
On October 17th, experience the La Marguerite Flower Festival. This festival, also known as Fete La Marguerite, is celebrated each year by many Saint Lucians. The day is dedicated to this native purple St. Lucian flower but also to the history of our island. Those who celebrate the festival dress up in purple and create displays out of the Marguerite flower, as well as sing traditional songs.
On October 27th, Creole Heritage Month will end with a bang with International Creole Day (Jounen Kweyol) celebrated throughout the island. This is the ultimate celebration of Saint Lucian cultural pride! Hear the Tambo-rhythms and groove along to traditional beats, watch the parades, and partake in lively, colorful street festivals all over the island. It’s a really exciting way to get a true sense of our Saint Lucian culture in one fun, amazing day.
