The 2020 Saint Lucia Jazz Festival Showcases The Caribbean's Rich Music Scene
Saint Lucia has a wonderfully vibrant music scene, and a special place in its heart for jazz in particular. The very first Saint Lucia Jazz Festival took place in 1992, in an effort to extend the tourist season. It was so successful that it quickly expanded in scope, gaining international coverage by outlets like BET and cementing its place as an anticipated tradition in the festival calendar. Some past performers at the event include music industry legends like Harry Belafonte, Chaka Kahn, Al Green, and Diana Ross.
Last year, a new version of the annual Saint Lucia Jazz Festival was launched in collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center. The second of its kind is set to take place from May 7 to 9 at a variety of intimate venues and public spaces throughout the island such as the Ramp on Rodney Bay and Gros Islet Park. The first wave of the festival’s lineup was recently announced, featuring some of the finest names in jazz music alongside acclaimed local talent: Chick Corea's Vigilette with Carlitos Del Puerto, Marcus Gilmore, Willie Jones III and Renée Neufville, Alphonso Horne and the Gotham Kings, and Ruben Fox's London Brass featuring Theon Cross and Mark Kavuma. And, along with the concerts, the jazz festival will also feature a number of exciting accompanying events including master classes, professional development, and live performance collaborations with Saint Lucia School of Music students and local musicians.
